Bad Barista
About This Spot
Nestled in a friendly corner of Alameda’s Encinal Avenue, Bad Barista unfolds like a cherished local secret—a cozy coffee haven where the rhythm slows just enough to savor a well-crafted cup and the warmth of familiar faces. Stepping inside, you’re greeted by the gentle hum of conversation and the comforting clink of ceramic cups, setting a pace that invites both quiet moments alone and easygoing exchanges with neighbors.
The atmosphere here is quietly vibrant, grounded in a community spirit that feels as much about connection as it does the coffee. The baristas wear their approachable friendliness as effortlessly as they pull espresso shots, welcoming you into a space that never rushes but always rewards curiosity. It’s a place where the joy comes as much from the people you meet as from the drinks they prepare.
The menu mirrors this thoughtful care with an inviting selection that surprises in the best way—specialty coffees that play with flavors and textures, perfectly complemented by sandwiches you assemble just the way you like, starting with your choice of bread, meats, and cheeses, and rounded out with little extras like creamy avocado or tangy mayo. Whether it’s a morning cappuccino or an afternoon Thai iced tea, each sip and bite feels rooted in comfort and crafted for enjoyment.
While many spots offer coffee, Bad Barista feels more like a pause in the day’s rush, a neighborhood gathering spot that’s as much about hospitality and discovery as it is about a good cup. It’s easy to imagine spending an unhurried hour here, the kind that lingers pleasantly in memory long after the cup is empty.

Delicious croissant with cheese aggs and bacon. And good coffee too.

With a mix of emotions swirling within me, I feel compelled to share my review of the beloved neighborhood café I'm reluctantly bidding farewell to. A recent change in my job location means I won't have the pleasure of visiting this delightful spot anymore. Nevertheless, I can't help but sing praises for this hidden gem and the experiences I've had here. What truly sets this café apart is the exceptional service provided by the dedicated staff. The owners, in particular, go the extra mile to make every customer feel welcome and valued. Even during the chaotic morning rush and bustling mid-afternoon lunch hours, their attentiveness shines through. They consistently have my order ready, striking a balance between efficiency and quality. Now, let's talk about the café's offerings, which are nothing short of delightful. Whether you're a coffee aficionado or a lover of delectable pastries, this place has it all. As you step inside, the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee instantly awakens your senses. The coffee itself is rich, flavorful, and expertly crafted, making it the perfect way to kickstart your day. As I bid farewell to this café, it's with a sense of gratitude for the memories it has given me. The combination of excellent service, carefully crafted beverages and pastries, and a cozy atmosphere make it stand out from the competition. To anyone who has the chance to visit this neighborhood café, I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try. Whether you need a quick caffeine fix or a peaceful spot to unwind, this café has got you covered. Treasure each moment you spend here, as it truly is a haven for coffee lovers and food enthusiasts alike.

We came in when they were closing but still we got our coffee. Staff was nice and friendly. The coffee was great, one of the best in the neighborhood. However, pastry we gat was not that great. They do have parking but it is shared with other establishments in the Ensinal Plaza.

During my tour of Alameda's dining scene, I snapped some photos of Bad Barista's offerings for Restaurant Week and these are the coolest dishes I saw. They make sweeter drinks that are almost dessert-like coffee with cream and fruity flavors. Their colorful, fun drinks really stand out, and they also do sandwiches and plenty of other fun food additions.

A great neighborhood coffee shop. Staff by hard-working folks who want to make sure they get your order right and deliver it to you quickly. Great range of drink options. Yummy Bakery treats. It's where a lot of people from our neighborhood meet talk or just hang out.
